Breast Cancer Awareness Program 22nd October 2011The Hans India Pg-2 (24-10-2011) Apollo Cancer Hospital launched ‘Prevent Breast Cancer from age Five’ campaign to create awareness amongst young women about the prevention and detection of this dreaded cancer. Mayor Mrs Banda Karthika Reddy, Actor Ms. Lakshmi Manchu, Danseuse Padmashri Ananda Shankar Jayant, Dr. Hari Prasad, CEO Central, Apollo Hospitals Group, Dr. Vijay Anand Reddy, Director, Apollo Cancer Hospital and large number of students from St. Ann’s College for Women, Scient Institute of Technology, Scient College of Pharmacy, Apollo Institute of Hospital Administration, Apollo Nursing College and others participated. World over 1.4 million new cases of breast cancer are being diagnosed every year. Half of these are from developing countries. India alone accounts for 10% of these cases, with 1,25,000 new breast cancer cases being diagnosed every year. Breast Cancer constitutes 22% of all cancers in women. For every 1,00,000 – 124 women are diagnosed of breast cancer every year. The most alarming aspect has been the shift in the age group of the disease from 50+ years to 30+ years. Today more and more young women are being diagnosed of breast cancer aver most oncologists. This necessitates awareness on prevention of breast cancer as early as from the age of 5 years on a war footing. Speaking on the occasion Ms. Karthika Reddy said the latest fad amongst the youth of maintaining figure and cutting on diet is harmful, appropriate diet with physical exercise can keep away all health ailments including cancer. Someone afflicted of cancer need not get perturbed unduly as the modern treatment options provide cure for cancer. A cancer survivor can lead a normal life like anyone else, she said. Across the country, there are about 10 lakh cancer patients of which six percent happen to be children. There can be many reasons, including genetic history for children getting affected with cancer and this programme was dedicated to the courage of these young cancer survivors, he informed.
